The Poverty Spiral

Many homeless people have no wish to be in that situation. They are there because circumstances have driven them there.

Consider:

  • No work means people are unable to pay for conventional lodgings.
  • When, for whatever reason, the family home is not open to them, people have no permanent base.
  • Without a permanent base it is hard for people to make themselves presentable.
  • When finding work becomes difficult and depressing, they may be tempted to find relief in alcohol or drugs and become even less employable.
This is just one of the ways in which it is easy to slip into the "underclass" which seems to exist in our society. Once in that underclass, the effort required to lift yourself out is enormous, often insuperable, even assuming that the incentive is there to make a start.

The knowledge that someone cares is often enough to encourage the first step out of the spiral and follow the route, however tortuous, to the re-discovery of self-worth.

Please help us to help those who find it difficult to help themselves.

The challenge of our task remains as great as ever...
